Interference paintings juxtapose light and dark areas, allowing them to mix (‘interfere’) in the air between the painting and the viewer’s eye. Essentially it is doing for light-and-dark what pointillism does for colour, and a large part of the pleasure consists in seeing how easily the image falls apart if you come too close.
